November 2004 Nokia 6630 smartphone selected by TIM to 3G handset portfolio Friday, November 26 2004 Nokia today announced that TIM (Telecom Italia Mobile), the leading mobile telecoms operator in Italy, running operations in Greece, Turkey and almost all over South America, has selected the Nokia 6630 smartphone for its 3G WCDMA product portfolio. The Nokia 6630 phone offers online e-mail, the possibility to download and view e-mail attachments while on the move, mobile broadband access to multimedia content, live video streaming and video conferencing. "We are very happy to work closely with TIM to ensure their customers can use the Nokia 6630 smartphone to take full advantage of the high-speed 3G networks and to show that the 3G mass market is here," said Tuula Rytilä-Uotila, Director, Imaging, EMEA, Multimedia, Nokia. TIM and Nokia are also collaborating on launching a Video Sharing service for TIM's customers in Italy. Video Sharing is a new multimedia service that enriches 3G mobile users' communication by allowing them to share a live camera view or a video clip while speaking on their mobile phone. TIM's innovative mobile TV services also enable 3G customers to watch TV programs live on the Nokia 6630 smartphone's large color display. The Nokia 6630 smartphone will be available through TIM stores in Italy. Based on Symbian OS, the Nokia 6630 phone is a tri-band handset designed to work on 3G (WCDMA), EDGE and 2G (GSM 900/1800/1900) networks around the world. Compared to current GSM networks, WCDMA enables more than ten times higher data speeds and better quality of service to mobile and portable wireless devices. Weighing 127 grams and measuring 110 x 60 x 21 mm, it is currently the lightest globally available megapixel dual-mode phone for GSM and WCDMA networks. The service is made possible by Pixology's PhonePrintTM technology, which has been developed in conjunction with Nokia. This innovative new mobile imaging service will form part of the Boots Pix2Print concept launched last month in collaboration with Nokia. The aim is to move away from a focus on price plans when selling camera phones and instead place the emphasis firmly on mobile imaging. Boots customers will be able to purchase the best camera phones and photo printers on the market and obtain technical advice on getting the most from their camera phone. The Boots Pix2Print printing service will offer a simple way for customers to print out photos taken with their camera phone. Customers can take pictures with their Nokia camera phone and immediately send them to their local Boots store over the mobile network. They then receive a text message when the photos are ready for collection at the store. Initially a pilot scheme encompassing 10 stores, it is envisaged that the service will experience increased pick-up as the image quality provided by camera phones continues to improve. The service has been designed to be as simple and easy to use as possible for the customer. Nicola Lewis, Category Manager, Boots Photo, said: "We have been leading the way in offering customers choice and value in the developing digital market. Pixology's PhonePrintTM is yet another demonstration of our commitment to offering innovation and great service in this area." Commenting on the new service, Yuval Yashiv, CEO of Pixology plc, said: "We are delighted to be offering this technology to Boots customers. Working with Nokia, we are looking to develop new opportunities with retailers across Europe. Camera-phones sales are dwarfing even the buoyant digital camera market, so we aim to address this substantial consumer base by providing it with this type of innovative technology." Mirko Aksentijevic, Imaging Business Manager, Nokia UK, said: "Camera phones offer people a unique ability to spontaneously capture moments wherever and whenever they want. The quality of advanced megapixel camera phones makes printing these images a reality and it is services such as Pixology's PhonePrintTM that will help consumers 'unlock' images from their phone and use it as they would use a digital camera." Participating stores: Coventry, Kingston Upon Thames, Leamington Spa, Birmingham, Brierley Hill, Brighton, Huddersfield, Derby, London - Liverpool Street Station, Leicester Fosse Park. About Pixology Pixology is a leading provider of innovative software for the digital photography industry. The group is focused exclusively on this market and has developed software and networks that enable equipment manufacturers and retailers of photo-finishing services to substitute the analogue film environment with the new digital infrastructure. Pixology's customers are principally blue-chip organisations in the USA, Japan and the United Kingdom, where Pixology pioneered internet-based mass-market digital printing. The company is listed on the AIM market of the London Stock Exchange. Source: Nokia Press Office PocketKiosk Builder released Sunday, November 14 2004 PocketKiosk Builder Askarya Technologies has released a solution for enterprises for running Pocket PC applications in Fullscreen Kiosk mode. PocketKiosk Builder is a developer tool using which any Pocket PC application (.exe/.vb/.NET CF) can be run in fullscreen kiosk mode on a Pocket PC device. This way users can be restricted to use a specific application only and that application takes complete control of the screen e.g. you can run Pocket Internet Explorer in full screen mode, thus making sure users don't run any other application such as games, music apps etc. Benefits: 1. Achieve full employee productivity by ensuring that only single application is running. 2. Avoid accidental device data corruption or system corruption by inexperienced users. 3. Ensure increased battery life as only one application can be run in Kiosk mode. 4. Utilize full screen area on Pocket PC devices having smaller display size. PocketKiosk Builder is continously being upgraded as we have been incorporating feedbacks from our customers since initial release. Monday, November 8 2004 American chip-making giant Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has an ambitious goal: Through its "50 by 15" initiative, it plans to connect 50% of the world's population to the Internet by the year 2015. The centerpiece of this initiative is the Personal Internet Communicator (PIC), a Windows CE-based computer with a price tag for emerging markets: The full device will sell for just US$185 (~ EUR 145), and AMD's resellers will accomodate customers with financing and lease options. The PIC offers not only web browsing, audio and video capabilities and instant messaging, but also high-powered word processing and spreadsheet capabilities - and this software has been created by SoftMaker: Instead of licensing Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel, AMD decided to ship TextMaker and PlanMaker, the flagship office suite applications of Germany-based SoftMaker, with every PIC computer worldwide. This means that millions of users worldwide will be able to work with TextMaker and PlanMaker and use this powerful office suite in their native tongue. AMD has just introduced this computer, in cooperation with TATA Indicom (VSNL), in India, and other large markets will follow soon. Announced so far have been contracts with telcom providers in Mexico and the Caribbean. It is Nokia's answer to artists' need to use mobile devices as an innovative medium for artistic expression as well as a channel to reach new and existing audiences. It allows people to download genuine pieces of art to their mobile phones. The Connect to Art international concept launch presents art from four internationally recognized artists: Louise Bourgeois, Nam June Paik, David Salle and William Wegman. Each has created a unique series of audiovisual works of art for Nokia devices. "It was very interesting to see the artists tailor their work for the mobile devices. They independently presented works of almost identical duration, 15-20 seconds, and they all included specifically made sounds as a key element of the artwork," said Julie Sylvester, Associate Curator of Contemporary Art at the State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg and Connect to Art exhibition curator, at the exhibition's opening ceremony in Monaco on November 2. According to Sylvester, the artists were attracted to the project because they see the mobile device as an intimate and at the same time popular environment. "It has been wonderful to work with William Wegman and Nam June Paik, two great pioneers of video art, and to have their immediate and direct response to the new medium. David Salle rushed at the idea from a painter's viewpoint. And, of course, it is very interesting to have Louise Bourgeois at the age of 92 thinking about mobile phones." Connect to Art is a cross-art project and the scope is only limited by the vision of the artist. It can expand to diverse forms of art including music, poetry, photographs, literature, and architecture - combining all forms of art in a new way. The concept will be developed further in cooperation with Nokia and artists from different parts of the world, as well as with museums, galleries and various other art institutions. "Art is about communication between the artist, the viewer and their interpretations of the world - overall this means connecting people. Importantly, it asks questions, inspires imagination and stretches boundaries - which is what Nokia wants to support with the Connect to Art concept," says Nokia Design Director Eero Miettinen. The artwork is exclusive to the Connect to Art mobile site at www.nokia.com/art/mobile, and art lovers can access and download their favorite artworks free of charge to Nokia 7710, 7610, 6670, 6630, 6620, 6600 and 6260 mobile devices. To highlight the value of the artwork, the number of downloads for each piece will be limited. The initial Connect to Art concept launch took place in Finland in September. Artwork from the Finnish artists Stefan Lindfors, Osmo Rauhala, Kati Åberg and Juha Hemanus together with composer Leif Segerstam will be presented in Monaco in connection with the international launch. With smartphone volumes growing strongly, Nokia outlined plans to expand the Series 60 smartphone platform to cover high-end and mid-range categories. The platform will embrace more extensive multimedia capabilities, supporting widescreen resolutions (up to 640 x 320) and touch-screen, pen-based and traditional input methods. Antti Vasara, Vice President, Technology and Sales, Nokia, elaborated: "In our industry, new kinds of products appear regularly, and evolve rapidly. Nokia has already shipped 15 million Series 60 phones.
