December 2002 Interstate Maps Provide Easy Long-Distance Routing on PDA Wednesday, December 18 2002 Mapopolis.Com, Inc. announced the immediate availability of Major Roads Maps which can be used to generate cross-state and cross-country routes. Traveling sales people, truck drivers, and tourists alike can use the Major Roads Maps to guide them on their journey, nation-wide, with turn-by-turn, address-to-address directions. The new release works with Mapopolis' Viewer for the Palm OS and Pocket PC platforms. The new software is available at www.mapopolis.com in conjunction with Mapopolis navigator ($99.95), Platinum ($34.95) and Platinum +GPS ($44.95) subscriptions. "Now you can tour the country," said Mapopolis Vice President Jeremy Straub, "previously, we were focusing on in-region navigation; this new release marks our entrance into the longdistance routing market." Providing long-distance routing positions the company to better serve its existing customers and attract new customers whose needs would not have been completely met without the long-distance capability. Particularly useful is that the entire solution is PDA-based. There is no need to limit the journey by downloading only a corridor of data surrounding your intended route. As all of the routing occurs right on the PDA, you can change your route numerous times throughout your trip without needing to reconnect to a desktop or to the internet to generate new routes or get a new corridor of data. Simply load the Major Roads Maps for any states that you want to route through, then load the county maps for your origin and destination. The PDA now contains all of the information needed to route and re-route you on your journey. Spurred by the sales of its two new products, the Palm(TM) Zire(TM) and Tungsten(TM) T handhelds, Palm branded devices continue to be the world's most popular handhelds. The introduction of the original Pilot handheld from Palm in 1996 ignited a revolution in handheld computing around the world. The simplicity, tiny size, low price tag and long battery life of Palm products -- along with the unprecedented one-button backup to a personal computer -- led to rapid adoption of the device and its Palm successors. Because Palm products let people stay connected to their most important information, they have become valuable tools to corporate executives and mobile professionals worldwide, expanding quickly into the consumer markets and winning the hearts of customers from college students to soccer moms. Palm remains the world's favorite handheld by being easy to use, expandable, wearable and highly mobile. The enduring advantage of a Palm handheld is that information is only a tap or two away versus the PC-style experience of complex dialog boxes and multiple, confusing steps to accomplish a basic task. Last year, Palm branded handhelds commanded 39.4 percent of the worldwide personal companion handheld device market, according to IDC. This year, the company's market share has stayed constant, even though the competitive landscape has attracted more than 10 Palm Powered(TM) licensees and more than 20 Microsoft Pocket PC-based devices. Still a nascent market, Palm research shows that in the U.S. alone there are more than 63 million individuals interested in purchasing handheld devices(1). A pop culture symbol Over the years, Palm has entered the lexicon as a definition of a handheld computer, and remains an enduring symbol of the social change initiated by Silicon Valley pioneers. The familiar three-ring HotSync(R) function "song" that plays when a user backs up the data on a personal computer has become a catchy tune from the boardroom to the kitchen desk. Even California's official Web site ( http://www.ca.gov ) carries a picture of a Palm branded handheld computer alongside pictures of world-famous Napa Valley grapes, the universally recognized San Francisco cable car, and the hillside letters spelling another cultural icon: Hollywood. In New York, Palm handhelds inspired a love song performed in a new off-Broadway production called the Water Coolers - The Ultimate Job Review. Palm branded handhelds have also made appearances on television shows such as David Letterman, Friends, Will & Grace, Law & Order, and Sex and the City. "The new converts who bought Palm Zire handhelds symbolize the beginning of a new generation of handheld users," said Todd Bradley, president and chief executive officer of Palm Solutions Group. "Zire handhelds are augmenting if not replacing paper-based organization systems, and are truly making a difference in the lives of users. "The Tungsten T is quickly becoming the new gold-standard in handheld computing," added Bradley. "Palm is a trusted choice with a comprehensive family of products. As your needs grow and change, you'll always be able to find a Palm handheld to keep track of what matters to you." On Oct. 7, Palm announced the Zire handheld, the most affordable and lightest-weight Palm branded handheld to date. With an estimated U.S. street price of $99, the Palm Zire handheld is designed for the first-time purchaser as "an affordable way to organize your life." Included in BusinessWeek's "The Best Products of 2002," the Zire handheld helps students, families and individuals in business meet the demands of juggling endless events and activities. Delivering power and precision to professionals worldwide, on Oct. 28, Palm debuted the Palm Tungsten T handheld, a smart and pocketable business device. The Palm Tungsten T handheld's design and software integration deliver smooth, one-handed data management, while new processing power and a new operating system supercharge applications -- making them faster and more efficient. Tungsten T customer reviews from shopping sites such as Amazon.com show that users are thrilled with the brilliant screen, sharp color, stylish design and new processing power. Source: Symbian Ericsson launches addition to Bluetooth family Tuesday, December 10 2002 Ericsson Technology Licensing launches the latest addition to the Bluetooth Suites family. The twin Suites are highly specialized for two markets with vast Bluetooth potential: Bluetooth wireless headsets and wireless Human Interface Devices (HID's). Wireless keyboards and mice, generally referred to as wireless HID's, are two Bluetooth products now making their way to the market. Much appreciated by computer users in need of a more flexible desktop environment, Bluetooth offers greater functionality. Mobile phone users, among others, are beginning to enjoy the increased mobility and freedom offered by wireless headsets. The Bluetooth HID Suite is Ericsson's answer to semiconductor companies intent on delivering reference designs for Bluetooth keyboards and mice to Original Design Manufacturers (ODM's) and Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM's). This new Suite provides Bluetooth radio, baseband and software technology in ready-to-use, easily integrated, total design solutions for fast time-to-market. "Great designs are not enough when competing in this tough industry. A lot of companies can offer the necessary hardware and software, but our Suites give customers access to so much more," says Johan Åkesson, Marketing Director of Ericsson Technology Licensing. "We offer a wide range of Bluetooth services, including training, testing, qualification and custom design services. In fact, Ericsson operates one of the few existing Bluetooth Qualification Test Facilities (BQTF) through which every Bluetooth product must pass." "There is a clear trend in the market forecasts provided by leading analysts that wireless HID's will be among the biggest Bluetooth segments in terms of volumes," says Johan Åkesson. "Factors certain to contribute to this growth are the current efforts by the major suppliers of operating system and PC's to integrate Bluetooth." The wireless headset is not only the most widely used Bluetooth application for mobile phones, but it is also quickly gaining ground as an accessory for cordless phones, in-car handsfree systems and voice recognition software. "As with wireless HID's, the trend among market experts are projecting a major growth for headsets," says Johan Åkesson. "As the Bluetooth headset pioneer, we know consumers want headsets that are light, and comfortable, have a good voice quality and are not too expensive." This puts a lot of demands on the Bluetooth design, which must be small, power efficient and inexpensive to manufacture. To achieve this, Ericsson builds its Suites around their highly integrated radio combined with baseband and software that are minimized for the application at hand. In addition, both the HID and Headset Suites feature support for the new Bluetooth Specification 1.2. Source: Ericsson Inventop Announces New App for CF Cards Tuesday, December 10 2002 Inventop (www.proximitymail.com), a leader in the Bluetooth networking space, today announced the availability of a significant new release of its ProximityMail(tm) collaborative messaging software for Bluetooth-enabled PDAs. ProximityMail(tm) 1.4 now supports HP's full iPaq line of PocketPCs with built-in Bluetooth, as well as BrainBoxes CF Cards. In addition, the ProximityMail(tm) 1.4 includes significant new capabilities including improved device discovery and an increased data exchange limit to 100k. ProximityMail(tm) 1.4 is available for free download from www.proximitymail.com, Download.com and other sites. "This is an exciting milestone for us because now we support a large part of the Bluetooth-enabled PocketPC universe," said Virginie Glaenzer, Inventop CEO. ProximityMail(tm) turns PDAs into a localized community-messaging network. It incorporates Inventop's Patent-pending BluePing Network(tm) technology, which enables hassle-free peer-to-peer networking, expanded Bluetooth effective range well beyond 10 meters, instantaneous "random area networks", and powerful communications capabilities for PDAs and other devices. BluePing Network(tm) technology is 100% compliant with the Bluetooth 1.1 specification and currently supports the PocketPC platform. ProximityMail(tm) facilitates community building, professional networking, and relationship building wherever groups of people are gathered (eg. tradeshows, conferences, ballgames, political events, etc.) Users can create and subscribe to groups, broadcast or send private messages and thereby easily initiate contacts with other people in the same geographical proximity. Unlike other point-to-point networking or messaging products, such as SMS, IM, or email, ProximityMail(tm) allows users to communicate anonymously to groups of users, without knowing a specific user's PDA id, phone number or email address. When ProximityMail(tm) or any other BluePing Network(tm) enabled application is installed on a Bluetooth-enabled PDA, the PDA acts like a network repeater, pinging other devices, establishing network connections, and transmitting network data as required. The PDA doesn't even have to be powered on! Unlike competing wireless networking schemes, this patent-pending technology requires no additional infrastructure, no expensive servers and server software, and no broadcast stations. Source: Inventop Spb Software House Releases GPRS Monitor Beta Tuesday, December 10 2002 Spb Software House (www.softspb.com), a developer of Pocket PC software, announced today the availability of Spb GPRS Monitor 2.0 Beta - a unique utility for measuring your GPRS connection speed and calculating total bandwidth used (and the associated costs). The first version of Spb GPRS Monitor had been long awaited by Pocket PC users and has received a great deal of positive feedback. Following the success of the first version of Spb GPRS Monitor, Spb Software House decided to add the functionality the users have been asking for, thus developing an even better second version of Spb GPRS Monitor. With Spb GPRS Monitor, users with wirelessly connected Pocket PCs have the ability to know all the details about their network connection and save money on their GPRS or cellular connection. Spb GPRS Monitor logs all GPRS traffic and reports data transfer amounts and costs over a certain period of time; it logs daily/monthly/yearly data transfer amounts, compares the collected data against pre-defined tariff rates and performs some other activities that help you to maintain your wireless account. Users will have more control over their wireless connection than ever before - and save money while doing so. The new version also adds new functionality to the software. The forthcoming Spb GPRS Monitor 2.0 will give mobile enthusiasts ability to monitor several network connection simultaneously - the software will automatically detect which connection is being used and switch to the corresponding profile. The new version of Spb GPRS Monitor also includes more flexible tariff settings - now almost every detail of any rate plan can be defined. Version 2.0 of Spb GPRS Monitor is also very customizable - users can now control what information they want to see on the Today page and in the taskbar icon. Another major point of version 2 is localization - the official release will be available in all the major languages. Localization packs for other languages will appear shortly after the final release. Spb GPRS Monitor 2.0 Beta is available for free evaluation. All user feedback, bug reports, and feature requests are greatly appreciated. The Spb Software House team welcomes such feedback at info@softspb.com. Source: Spb Software House TextMaker for Pocket PCs is Shipping Thursday, December 5 2002 Pocket PC owners expect their mobile organizers to let them open, work on, and save Microsoft Word documents, with content and formatting kept intact. Pocket Word, after all, is marketed by Microsoft as the mobile companion to the desktop edition of Microsoft Word. Reality check: Pocket Word's feature set could be, to put it mildly, described as "lightweight". "Anemic" might be a better term. Pocket Word may be suitable for jotting down a note, but definitely not for sophisticated word processing: No headers or footers. No tables. No outliner. No on-the-fly spell-checking. Severely limited text formatting. No styles. Image support? Barely existent. Document conversion from and to Microsoft ord "technically" works but has a devastating effect on documents: As soon as you move a .DOC file to a Pocket PC, all features that Pocket Word cannot cope with are stripped and thrown away. Not much more formatting than bold, italic, and underlining survives. It doesn't take much to develop a better word processor than Pocket Word, but just-released TextMaker for Pocket PCs does not stop there. In fact, TextMaker has it all: Multi-language spell-checker. Spell-checking on the fly. Graphics. Footnotes. Tables. Sophisticated character and paragraph formatting. Paragraph and character styles. Autotext -- and lossless conversion of Microsoft Word .DOC files right on your Pocket PC. TextMaker for Pocket PCs is the most comprehensive word processor ever developed for Windows CE. Imagine that: Desktop-class word processing on your Pocket PC! TextMaker for Pocket PCs retails for US$49.95 (EUR 59.95). A bundle of TextMaker for Pocket PCs with the desktop version TextMaker for Windows is available for only US $69.95 (EUR 79.95). TextMaker is the first completed component of SoftMaker Office anywhere, a mobile office suite for Windows, Windows CE, and Linux which also comprises a Microsoft Excel-compatible spreadsheet, a database package, and a PIM/groupware combo. SoftMaker Office anywhere will be available in "regular" desktop and mobile editions as well as a client/server edition running over the LAN or Internet. The components of SoftMaker Office anywhere will be released step-by-step in 2003. Using the Pocket PC's built-in web browser, and the Flash plug-in from Macromedia, users can play their favorite casino games in an engaging animated format, and win real gold which may be cashed out immediately. "We had discussed doing a mobile site for some time," said Stefan Putin, Marketing Manager of The Gold Casino, "and the Pocket PC / Flash combination was too good to pass up.
