Softtrends said its Contactogo application gives a new dimension to the owner Info feature of Pocket PC. Contactogo today plug-in takes the information set in owner info, retrieves the corresponding information from Contact database, and creates a virtual business card for the user. User can customize the business card, and beam or email right from the Pocket PC today screen. A full-featured Contactogo application further extends the virtual business card customization, distribution, and Cardfile concept. Using Contactogo, users can send customized business cards not only for themselves but also for other colleagues or family members when necessary. Contactogo currently supports 3 levels of customization; Standard, Extended, and Full Card. While the Full Card encapsulates information from all fields in Pocket PC Contact manager database (including personal information), Standard and Extended cards are limited to using mostly business related information. Depending on the recipient of the card, user can select one of these 3 types of cards before sending. If the user represents more than one company, switching the Company to bring a new set of business cards is just a tap away. Since Contactogo uses the data stored in the Pocket PC Contact manager application, users can continue to manage their contact information using Pocket PC contact manager while reaping the benefits provided by Contactogo. "The greatest advantage of Contactogo is its ability to EASILY separate business and personal information when user wants to send contact information - a feature the "Beam Contact" option in Pocket PC Contact manager does not provide", said D.P.Samantarai, CTO, Softtrends. "Cardfile functionality is very useful in grouping contacts, and changing the Owner info data in Pocket PC with a single tap" he added. Additional information, evaluation and purchase option for Contactogo is available at Softtrends Website . Users may also request 30-day free trial version by sending an email to Sendmecontactogo@softtrends.com . Initially launched in September, 2002, FatFinger offers an alternative to Graffiti(r) for data entry on Palm OS devices. FatFinger provides finger-sized onscreen keyboards that can be used with any Palm OS application - Address, Date Book, Memo Pad, To Do List, Mail - as well as countless third-party programs. FatFinger works with or in place of the existing Palm onscreen keyboards, and can be configured to launch when using any of the standard keyboard shortcuts."Palm devices have always been a fantastic reference tool for looking up information while on the go," said Geoffrey Thompson, CEO of Avaion. "We created FatFinger because we wanted to make it as easy to get critical information into your Palm as it is to get it out - without the learning curve of Graffiti." Business and Consumers Embrace FatFinger "We use Palms for signature capture for our delivery vehicles, much like the UPS system (but a lot less expensive)," said Mark Nicholas, Manager of Information Systems from Lawton Bros., Inc. in Orlando, Florida. "FatFinger has made it much easier for our drivers, who have little or no experience with PDAs, to add the customer name to the signature." "I have arthritis, and holding the thin stylus is not very comfortable," said Sue Moenius, a pastor from Massachusetts. "FatFinger is ideal because I can use my fingers, and after just an hour of total use, I can already 'two-finger type' with as much speed as the fastest Graffiti or Palm keyboarder." Pricing, Availability, Distribution and Support A free, fourteen-day trial version of FatFinger is available for download at the Avaion company website, http://www.avaion.com. The registered version, with enhanced customer support, is available for $14.95. Registered users may upgrade for free. Source: PDA Center Consumers need to be aware of non-original mobile phone batteries Wednesday, February 12 2003 Over the past months, cases have been reported of non-original mobile phone batteries overheating in the European, African and Asian regions, causing damage to both batteries and phones. As these reported cases understandably raise public concern, Nokia wants to raise consumer awareness about non-original batteries and the possible consequences of using non-original batteries. Nokia is currently conducting a thorough investigation of various non-original batteries manufactured by different entities and obtained in a number of regions. Based on the investigation conducted on the non-original batteries that Nokia has been able to obtain, the batteries appear to not fulfill the safety and quality requirements Nokia applies to original Nokia batteries. It is also possible that using non-original mobile phone chargers increase the risk of battery malfunction. Original Nokia batteries and chargers are designed and manufactured adhering to stringent safety and quality measures. These include very strict requirements regarding the materials and insulation used inside the batteries as well as continuous production control and intensive product testing. At Nokia, product safety and quality is an integral part of our business. Nokia recommends that consumers use only original Nokia accessories with Nokia mobile phones. Under the normal Nokia warranty provisions, using non-original accessories may invalidate the warranty. The NPD Group data also confirmed the Palm Zire handheld had the highest sales figures during its first three months after introduction of any handheld tracked by the market-information company. The NPD Group reported that during the quarter more than 228,000 Palm Zire handhelds were sold. Additionally, the five top-selling handhelds during the quarter all were Palm branded products -- accounting for 46 percent of all units sold. Palm Solutions Group also said that registration data indicates more than 90 percent of consumers who bought Zire handhelds are new handheld purchasers -- exactly the customer set Palm intended. Palm believes that many of the Zire buyers of today will become purchases of higher-performance Palm handhelds in the future. The Palm Zire handheld, which was introduced Oct. 7, 2002, is the most affordable and lightest-weight Palm branded handheld to date. With an estimated U.S. street price of $99, the Palm Zire handheld target buyer is the first-time purchaser who needs an affordable way to organize a busy life. Named as a best product of 2002 by BusinessWeek, PC Magazine and others, the Zire handheld helps students, families and individuals in business meet the demands of juggling endless events and other activities. "Growing the handheld space with fresh products that target new customers is infusing new energy in the PDA category," said Ken Wirt, senior vice president of marketing and product management for Palm Solutions Group. "The NPD Group data is an indispensable tool that ensures that we have the best market intelligence to react rapidly to changes in the marketplace." While the handheld space is still a nascent market, Palm research shows that in the United States alone there are more than 63 million individuals interested in purchasing handheld devices.(1) Palm Zire Handheld Led European Sales According to GfK's latest analysis (October/November 2002), all five top-selling handhelds in Europe are Palm branded devices. The Palm Zire handheld, introduced on Oct. 8, led with more than 12 percent of the market. The Palm family of handhelds led with 44 percent of the market, up 6 points vs. August/September.(2) Palm Zire Handheld Features and Benefits The Palm Zire handheld is an easy way for consumers to carry the information they need, anywhere they go. The Zire handheld is an elegant and sleek device -- the lightest-weight Palm handheld on the market at 3.8 ounces. The distinctive, polished white face and silver back lends a visual simplicity and elegance. The new two-button design focuses on what matters to first-time users -- Address Book and Date Book -- while providing an engaging look and feel. Palm's famous, easy-to-use personal information applications allow users to quickly keep track of important information. Recurring appointments need only be input once. Helpful reminder alarms alert users to meetings or appointments. The Palm Zire handheld can store approximately 6,000 addresses, 5 years of appointments (approximately 3,000 entries), and more. Zire handheld users can expand the functionality by choosing from 16,000 commercially available applications, from business software to puzzles and games to personal productivity software (www.palm.com/zire). Zire handhelds also come with four interactive games: Puzzle, Minehunt, Giraffe and Hardball. "The introduction of the original Pilot handheld from Palm in 1996 ignited a revolution around the world. And now, the simplicity, tiny size, low price and long battery life of the Palm Zire handheld continues to fuel that revolution, leading to rapid adoption of the device and extending the Palm brand as the trusted choice for handheld computing," said Wirt. Source: Palm New Release of TextMaker for Handheld PCs Wednesday, February 12 2003 Owners of Windows CE-based Handheld PCs expect their mobile device to let them read, and work on, Microsoft Word documents, with content and formatting kept intact. Pocket Word, after all, is marketed by Microsoft as the mobile companion to Microsoft Word. How does Pocket Word fare in reality? Pocket Word's feature set could be, to put it mildly, described as "lightweight". "Anemic" might be a better term. Pocket Word may be suitable for jotting down a note, but definitely not for sophisticated word processing: No headers or footers. No tables. No outliner. No on-the-fly spell-checking. Severely limited text formatting. Support for .DOC files? As soon as you open a Microsoft Word .DOC file, all formatting that Pocket Word cannot process is stripped and thrown away. Not much more than basic formatting like bold, italic and underline survives. There is only one alternative to Pocket Word: TextMaker for Handheld PCs, created by German software manufacturer SoftMaker. TextMaker delivers desktop-class word processing on any Handheld PC. TextMaker is the first and only complete word processor for Handheld PCs. Graphics? Footnotes? 16 language spell-checker and hyphenation? No problem. Tables? Sophisticated character and paragraph formatting? AutoText? At your fingertips. Lossless conversion of Microsoft Word .DOC files? Right on your Handheld PC. A new version of TextMaker has just been released: TextMaker now supports export not only to Microsoft Word 6.0, but also to Word 95, 97, Word 2000, and Word XP. Additionally, the HTML import and export filters have been upgraded, and program speed increases significantly with this new release. Many additional time-saving features have been added, as well as the obligatory bug fixes. This new release is a free service pack for registered users. TextMaker for Handheld PCs is available right now from SoftMaker's web site at http://www.softmaker.com for US$69.95 or through online reseller Handango at http://www.handango.com. It is bundled with a free copy of TextMaker for Windows, SoftMaker's flagship Windows-based word processor that offers seamless document exchange with its Handheld PC-based companion.
