Imagine installing Microsoft Word on your Pocket PC or your Handheld PC. Nice dream... only thing is, this is not going to happen. Microsoft Office is tied to Microsoft Windows and will remain so. Furthermore, it is too large and bloated for small portable devices, and this will not change either. There are other word processors and office suites for Linux, but they are either too slow and bulky and complicated to use or do not provide an adequate feature set or acceptable import and export filters for Microsoft Word's .DOC files. SoftMaker, a German software manufacturer that has been developing office productivity software since 1987, is bent on changing the status quo in the office suite market. It is starting with word processing, with the remaining office suite components following soon. TextMaker, SoftMaker's flagship word processor, has just been released in two new versions: TextMaker for Linux and TextMaker for Windows, complementing the already available versions of TextMaker for Pocket PCs and Handheld PCs. The major design goals for TextMaker were: Make it fast and compact. Make it easy-to-use. And make it Microsoft Word-compatible. The result: TextMaker for Linux and Windows. A multi-platform word processor that launches lightning-fast, needs little memory and has the rich feature set of a modern high-end word processor. A word processor that reads and writes Microsoft Word 6/95/97/2000/XP files seamlessly. TextMaker for Linux and TextMaker for Linux retail for US$49.95 (EUR 49.95) each; a Windows and Linux combo pack is available for US$69.95 (EUR 69.95). TextMaker is the first component of SoftMaker Office anywhere, an office suite for Windows, Linux, and Windows CE which also includes a Microsoft Excel-compatible spreadsheet, a database package, and a PIM/groupware combo. SoftMaker Office anywhere will be available in "regular" desktop and mobile editions as well as an ASP-style edition running over the LAN or Internet.
